So, knowing that I definitely want to start wearing kilts, should I start with the more expensive MacDougall 8 yard kilt or, as others suggested, the cheaper semi-trad type (probably Black Watch) from usakilts or others?
I'm thinking the cheaper one first, but I would have to measure myself, where there is a store in MD that custom fits you for the more expensive one. So, I'd know I was measured correctly for that one.

Welcome from Maryland. If you don't mind the short drive there is a great kilt shop at 9415 Main St., Manassas, VA 20110 called the Kilted Nation. He has several styles and can get you fitted for a reasonable price.

Welcome from Texas! Big guys can look good wearing kilts, wearing them high waisted, in my opinion. There are many options for the first kilt, any of them are right, just do what you think is right for you.
Stop in the Gentlemen of Substance social group and say "Hi" and ask your questions, there are guys of all sizes and they can help you in every aspect of kilt wearing and accessories.
