It's strange for me to hear about people being so tight about such things in other parts of the country (or world)

Here in the NW, legally speaking you can walk around the streets with a broadsword as long as it's not concealed, and you should be fine as long as you conduct yourself in a normal sane manner.

If you're kilted, wearing a sgian dubh has (for me) been a total non issue with everyone I encounter.

I have however seen people as a gag carry other items in their sock such as nice hand-forged forks, deer antlers with no blade, interesting chunks of twisted hardwood etc etc.

It initially seemed strange to me, too.

Here in the NW, legally speaking you can walk around the streets with a broadsword as long as it's not concealed, and you should be fine as long as you conduct yourself in a normal sane manner.

I spent most of the latter half of my "formative years" in Montana (where openly carrying pretty much everything was legal at the time and not unusual in rural areas). After spending some time enlisted following that, moving to California and then Florida as a civilian was a bit of a switch for me.

As a civilian in Florida, you can openly carry only pepper spray, a non-lethal stun gun or a standard, folding pocket knife. Everything else is illegal without a permit -- including fixed blade knives with only two exceptions: plastic knives and blunt-bladed table knives. This is especially strange to me considering the size of the state and the amount of it that is still undeveloped and wild, but it is good to know that I am legally entitled to butter my bread at dinner with impunity.

But it is the law and, out of respect for those in civilian uniform, I won't wear a Sgian (or anything that looks like one) as long as I do not possess a permit. If we ever move to an open carry state or if I ever feel the need to acquire a permit, I will wear a Sgian Dubh.

But, for now, the top of my hose stays empty.

Slow down there partner, those generalizations are coming a little fast and loose.

Portland may be that forgiving, but your statement does not apply to all of the Northwest. It CERTAINLY doesn't apply to Seattle.

While at a mall I was asked by security to remove my sqian dubh. I told him I would if the lady in the Burka would remove her knife. He said he wouldn't bother her because it was part of her religion. I said that my sgian dubh was a part of my heritage. He thought about it and walked away. Point made! I can see the local headlines, mad terrorist takes over mall with 4 inch knife. Yeah right.

Just as in Texas (Fort Worth Specifically), I have walked down the Main St with a long gun (rifles and shotguns) with no problem. I wear my sgian dubh pretty anywhere I want to as long as it is not a Government Office Building. If any retail places tries to limit wear of it, I have a friend (a lawyer) who loves to 'deal' with them for free as he feel the same as me and is very right wing.

Outside of the State of Texas, then I have to deal with each on their own but will attempt to pursue the wearing of the sgian dubh and will challenge the ability to not allow it as long as they allow others to wear similar items.

A "knife permit" forsooth?! Do such things even exist? How 'bout "baseball bat permits"? It's bad enough that some states (like mine) require a permit to excercise certain constitutional rights, but the day I'm required to get a "knife permit" is the day I give up on my once-free country....

In Florida, it is a "weapons or firearms" permit and fixed blade knives are considered weapons by state law.

Dummy sgian = pointless. Yes! That is it exactly. Maybe keep your pen there? Oh, that has a point. Maybe your keys? Cell phone? In civilized urban settings probably is not appropriate as it once was. In the hills maybe. But here in 2009 in Massachusetts I would even be unlikely to wear it at a highland games. I keep a tiny folding knife in my sporran for my nails and the odd assassination.

I have never found anything odd about assassinations. One of my more favorite sports if I do say so.
