I think the best response you can give would be the one that best describes your path to wearing them (without boring the listener). Have several responses depending on the circumstances, but the short story goes like this: I had always been intrigued by them, without knowing of my interest, an attractive woman encouraged me to find out about them, I tried one and got hooked, and then realized that I was happy to have new choices.
Or sometimes I just say, "I got bored with pants."

It helps me start conversations with women.
I live in a very multicultural city. I very very rarely get asked. The comments around these parts from men are "Cool kilt", "Awesome dude!", the thumbs up, and the best one - " My (wife, s/o, gf) wants me to get one. Can you tell me where?"
