You're in Virginia?
Find someplace to pick up the implements once or twice and then just suck it up and sign up for the C's at the Potomac Festival.
2009 Potomac Celtic Festival

Weekend after next! June 12-13!
Sure you'll suck. You'll fall all over yourself and you'll wonder how you'll EVER throw 56 pounds. We all start out that way, but so what? You'll be DOING it! Then start practicing for Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina in July...probably a bit of a drive, but that's OK
Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

Here's a goal for you! Set at least one PR at these Games!

and then finish up the season here:

You CAN do this.

I was lucky and happened upon my coaches accidentaly. They were pracitcing in a field and I just walked up to say hello. I would work really hard to find a local you could practice with. If you don't just jump in and try it at a game, talk to some of the competitors and find a local who can help you. When you start, video your practice and post it on Utube. Let us know and we can help analyze your form as best we can. Welcome to the family of throwers here on XMTS!

Find someone experienced to work with, at least the first half-dozen times you throw and you'll short circuit mistakes that kept me throwing at a mediocre level for my entire first season. Make up your own gear, find a buddy who wants to do this so you have a pair of eyes watching you and go to it.
And remember..YouTube is your friend! There are a million videos up there from the Pros to total amateurs that have no idea what to do. Watch the professionals closely...where to they cast the weight, what are their feet doing..etc. etc.
you CAN do this.
Everything Alan said!
I live in the middle of the city and I throw in a local park. Ok, so people clear out when they see the caber.
Best advice I can give is to just get your toys together and just thorw--not hard, but so you get an idea of what is involved. Then go to the next highland games you can get to and talk to the guys. We're a friendly bunch and will gladly share tips. Everytime I compete I talk to guys who want to get into the sport. I've even been there when they've competed in their first games as a novice. Great to see---come on in--you'll love it!
