Here is the picture of Prince Charles knighting the triple olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy. Kilted, of course !

Again, one would not expect the Prince of Wales to be wearing the uniform of a Highland regiment at an Investiture at Buckingham Palace. The Royal Navy is the Senior Service in the United Kingdom, hence you see the Royal Family in naval uniform more often ( and of course, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and The Duke of York all serve/have served in the Navy ). The kilt is worn in Scotland, rarely in England or Wales, as has been pointed out on a recent thread.

Well said Sandford, It would not be looked upon very favourably if HRH Prince Charles was wearing a kilt to an Investiture at Buckingham Palace, of course the Royal Navy uniform is just right for the event and the location.

I certainly know nothing of royal protecol, but if Hoy was the only one being knighted, and if the palace knew Hoy was going to be kilted, I would have considered it a compliment to his heritage for the Prince to be kilted too. It's not like he doesn't wear them at other times.

And are kilts only a military form of dress there? I don't understand that comment at all.

Plus, isn't the Queen supposed to be the one doing this? Again, this is all reaaally foreign to me.

The Queen often delegates investitures to Prince Charles. As the Heir Presumptive, he will have to get used to doing these events when he becomes king. In other words, he is "deputy CEO" in "the Firm", so he needs to get to know the ropes.

Prince Charles deputises for the Queen at some investitures.

He was giving various honours to different people and not just to people from Scotland.

There is an annual investiture ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse but I do not recall seeing him kilted at that either.

Maybe because it's in the lowlands?

But, as Sanford explained, the Royal Navy is the "senior service" to the British Army. Custom and protocol would dictate the wearing of an RN uniform over the uniform of a Scottish Regiment.
