My wife and I were just discussing that yesterday. We moved from San Jose to just outside of a small town of less than 1000 people. We both miss (just a little) the fine dining, theaters, and other venues where dressing up was part of the experience of the San Francisco bay area. On a more kilt related note, we hosted Renaissance themed parties (including a period band, foods, and games.) Unfortunately, those things are missing up here. However, those were replaced with fresh sea air, elk in the backyard, and better schooling for our three youngest children.

The big deal then was 18th birthday parties, there were lots of them and some of them were very lavish. Many parents hired a hall and a DJ for their son's or daughter's 18th. At 18 in the UK you are an adult and can do anything except stand as a candidate for election or drive a bus or an 'artic' (tractor trailer). You can drive a bus at 20, but you have to be 21 to be a politician or a trucker. So yes, those parties had booze too. I bet anything arranged by the schools won't.

Nick is in the majority as far as the Prom thing goes. Very few of the High School students go to either prom. I think we have a good twenty High schools here in Boston, and if they coordinated all of them together, they would not fill even the smallest gym. A cultural shift from my High School days (daze).

Well, my son doesn't post here very often, so I'll share a couple of pics. He just graduated from high school this past Thursday. Here is his senior portrait. He really loves his band uniform!

The previous weekend he piped for the graduation ceremony at Warren Wilson College (Presbyterian affiliated).

He wore full formal kit to last year's prom, but this year he just didn't go. He's trying to save his $ for repairs to a classic set of Uilleann pipes, and there's college tuition, etc. He just didn't feel like shelling out for the tickets. Also, he's "between girlfriends" at the moment, and in my experience guys going stag is much more rare than girls going sans date.

A great graduation pic cousin,
Was in the cap and gown supply business for about six years, worked many college graduations. It is always a thrill to see the graduates led in by the faculty attired in their full academic regalia. Usually the one time of year the college/university has the full focus on education rather than athletics.
Don't ever recall a kilted piper leading a graduation I was at, but they should be traditional for all.
