All you really need to turn it up a notch in formality is change the sporran.
I picked this jacket and waistcoat up at my local tartan shop, they are ex-rentals so that helped, the jacket had never been worn, and the waistcoat was new. It has proven to be the most versatile jacket in my wardrobe and a great alternative to a suit. I've worn it at everything from a wedding to a funeral.

Swap For Cloth Buttons
If the buttons really bother you, then swap them out for black fabric covered buttons-- the kind used on tuxedos. It will tone down the jacket, but still keep it formal enough for black tie events.
You will need to do the same for the five button waistcoat, but you can leave the shiny buttons on the three button waistcoat for evening wear, if you so desire.
Either way the black Argyll is still the best "one jacket" option.
