I did some research off-forum and found that there is indeed such a thing as teflon-coated wool yarn, so she could be talking about wool or PV (Poly Viscose). I believe that PV is not as expensive as wool, so if she's using that, it could explain her lower price.

I own a PV kilt made of the teflon-coated fiber and I love it... it's durable, washable and lighter so better suited to our warm climate. But... it's not wool and IMHO, if what you're looking for is a traditional 8 yd. kilt, 16 oz. wool is still the best. Also, far more tartans are available in wool than in PV.

Again, I think you'll want to clarify with her exactly which material she'll be using.

I too have a poly-vicose kilt and I want a wool one now. Although its a pretty nice kilt it seems to be very "together" and it feels "ready-shaped" because it is quite stiff. Thats why I want a wool one

No higher credential in the kiltmaking world. Best there is. She's a craftsman for sure. Glad you're gonna go for it.

Fair warning. The quality is so good that you're gonna become addicted to that Keith Kilt School level of quality.

I've purchased TEN kilts hand sewn by Kathy Lare, a graduate of the Keith Kilt School.

There is just no need to deal with middlemen merchants when you have direct access to your kiltmaker.

I recall having some fears when ordering my first kilt from Kathy...an unknown deal. It all passed when the first kilt arrived.

Consider yourself lucky to have found the lady and be close enough to do business in person with her.

I am torn between Matt and Kathy for my mezt. I want to support Matt's cause, and I have heard such good things about both. The only thing that might temper that is the exchange rate. The quality and longevity of such a thing is worth a few pennies, well, hundreds of dollars, more. I also feel like I am helping to support a tradition and an art.

There's been a LOT of warnings against Heritage of Scotland (and their parent company gold bros.) both on this forum and elsewhere. Apparently, what you see is not always what you get. I've never dealt with them, but personally I wouldn't take the risk. If nothing else because their shop in Edinburgh looks like a carnival costume shop. I always thought it was a souvenir shop until I found this forum. (Yes I know it sasy Norway for my location, but I used to live in Edinburgh).

But of course there have been some positive reviews here as well. Might just be my overly skeptic nature shining through...

Our wool handmade kilts are made in Scotland by our trusted kiltmakers and there is nothing bad I could say about their quality. Prices are competetive due to the large amount of kilts we order from our kiltmakers - and btw should a good price be considered a fault? My father owns one and he's delighted so I can assure you these are great and easy to wear.

Also, we have been under new management for a while now, so I am sure all the bad memories will now be gone forever

Don't worry Heather. I've bought about 10-15 products from HoS and theyve all been great - exactly as expected and a good price. My kilt was also made within 3 weeks after I phoned you guys and asked for it to be ready for this weekend - very much on time and a great surprise!
