shenanigans
so i was looking at scotland kilt company after seeing it in one thread and it looked pretty sweet. i liked the hamilton grey but i dont know any history of the tartan. anyone who does is well appreciated for the information. but aside from that when i consulted the great and powerful oracle elgoog i found this site http://www.kiltednation.com/home.php?cat=52 they have the same pictures of what i assume to be the same kilt but at double the price they also carry utilikilts. are these simply middlemen trying to earn a living on one h3ll of a markup or something completely different. i dont want to start fights i just never heard of them

They are both middlemen selling the same or very similar mass produced kilts in PV. 16oz PV is a myth---it is actually more like 11-12 oz. The only difference is where they are based out of (one in Sotland , the other this side of the pond), and how much markup they feel they need to make. $50us plus s/h from Scotland will probably end up being $65-75US, where the other $105US will cost less to ship to yhe US but still be more expensive overall.
When you are ready to consider a full 8 yard wook kilt you have a good kilt maker right there in KC (well, Overland Park, actually) in JHiggins, although their prices are somewhat higher than some other kiltmakers. You should check them out sometime and maybe get fitted. They built my first kilt as well as a couple jacket/waistcoats for me when I first started getting into wearing the kilt. For tje size of my order I saved a good bit by having it done here in the states as I did not have to pay the heavy customs fees that you can get stuck with on importing expensive Scottish kilt products.

Brad the owner of Kilted Nation is a very reputable businessman. His retail shop of kilts is a real service to the our region. I can't speak to the kilts in question. But like all of us he has mouths to feed and a business to run. If he can't make a profit he will just close his doors.

Hey all,
Yup, can absolutely get the kilts for cheaper, direct from Heritage of Scotland....they deal in thousands of the cheaper PV kilts, and are the manufacturer. There is no way I can match the price.....in fact....if you can get it for $50 (but it looks like right now they are offering it at a discounted rate of about $63)...I say go for it
Keep in mind, the additional costs, shipping and customs duties....
At $105....in the US....I am selling these kilts for cheaper that just about anyone else....you will find the at anywhere from $125 to $150. To date, I have not had anyone complain about the price to quality ratio.
So, I don't knock you for getting something cheaper elsewhere.
As to the material.....if you would read the description on my site, I set the record straight......its not straight PV......its a PV/acetate blend (the acetate give it a little bulk)......and I have stated on the product description that it feels more like the equivalent weight of a medium weight material (12-13 oz).
As to Hamilton Grey....I could be wrong, but I do believe it is one that the company has created...I'm not sure on that though, but I have not seen it anywhere else. It is very popular, though, and dresses up nicely.
Now, if you are looking for the real deal, the tank, so to speak, we work with two mills in Scotland.....Lochcarron and House of Edgar, to supply custom made, wool kilts. Anyone that is interested in their heritage, in have a kilt that is truely made in Scotland, this is where we go to.
But not everyone can afford a tank....which is why we offer a broad range of kilts in a range of styles and prices.
I hope this helps,
Brad

oh...and BTW....looking at the prices for the the casual "PV" kilts, direct from Heritage of Scotland....note that their direct pricing is about $70 - $80...and these are reduced prices....with shipping and customs charges....it should be almost equal.

The Scotland Kilt Company has it for about 60$, free basic shipping. I got the Heritage of Ireland from them, and have no real complaints. It's a little stiff, and certainly doesn't compare to HoE or Lochcarron wool, but for a cheap knock-about, it looks good and gets the job done. Granted, looking good is part of the job ;)

I've purchased two kilts from Brad at TKN and his customer service is excellent. Both kilts softened up some after a short period of time and are great for hiking out here on the Western Slope. They are lighter than my SWK standards but they breathe better in really hot weather which is why I got them for hiking around. Brad truly helped out with the MacKenzie I got from TKN as he had it hemmed before shipping it out (it is a casual kilt w/ two straps and 4-5 yrds) and the MacLeod of Harris is a full 8 yrds that I'll have hemmed here by a local seamstress. The kilts are ok, just what he's advertised, and they suit my needs as a knock-around. Yes they are stiff initially BUT they do break in and soften up after several wearings. They are an excellent company to do business with and are upfront with their marketing of the products. These two kilts will fit the bill for what I need them for but when I want to get "dressed up" I'll go to one of my tanks.
