Exclamation Tell it to the Marines!

A humble request of you Leathernecks out there.

I'm not a Marine, never have been. I served 13 years on active duty in the USAF, and about 10 more in the Air Guard, in peace and war. I served a joint tour with the US Navy in Iceland, and have served on joint assignments with all the services except the Coast Guard. I am now happily retired from military service, but I currently work as a "civilian warrior" for the Army Corps of Engineers. (wear Army field uniforms, and get shot at with the soldiers in nasty parts of the world) I did however complete and graduate from the very rigorous United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

Would the Leathernecks in the room let me wear the Leatherneck tartan?

    Respectfully requested, ColMac

As a fellow graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, I would not have any problem with you wearing the Leatherneck tartan if you so chose. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who has served alongside Marines is an honorary Marine.

    Thanks for asking first though.

I agree with Sir William. Serving next to Marines is a privilege and if you are accepted by that brotherhood you are a member. Wear the Leatherneck Tartan with pride.

I feel if you wear it, it must be worn with respect... I have no problem with anyone showing respect, honoring the Marines, or even a Marine in particular... I say.. wear it with pride and respect..

I don't wanna sound like a jerk buuuutttt. Doing a course alongside Marines is not the same as Bootcamp at Parris Island or San Diego and not like OCS at quantico and that's how you get the Eagle,Globe, and Anchor which makes you a Marine.

I was a Marine but fought in Iraq alongside Army rangers and Navy Seals. I would never wear a ranger tab or a seal device.
It's kinda the same with the kilt do what you want but that's only my opinion.
I'm a Marine and still don't have a leatherneck tartan yet when i get funds i will but it urks me a little when i do see people with it that weren't Marines. Sorry if I pissed anyone off

I just looked this up on the Scottish Register of Tartans website re the Leatherneck tartan:

    STA ref: 3612
    STWR ref: none
    Designer: Hall & Macleod
    Tartan date: Not Specified
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
    Category: Military

    Restrictions:

Registration notes: Designed by Bob Hall and R H Macleod for the U.S. Marine Corps Historical Foundation. Does not have the sanction of the Corps but is sometimes sold as the 'U.S. Marines.'
Just something to keep in mind, as far as the registration notes go the tartan is not official therefore anyone can wear it, the tartan is after all a fashion tartan, if you like get it and wear it well.

Well, one unhappy Marine out of six, is enough to make me stop. I think the comparison he made was apples to oranges, since tabs and badges are awarded with legal orders, but if 15% of Marines say no then I don't go.

Then again, the Leatherneck tartan has NO official connection to the USMC.

    Just a privately designed tartan.

So, as the saying goes "quit 'yer whining".

I was not a Marine, and I still wear my leatherneck kilt. The world has not ended.
