Kilted Equestrians
Ladies & Gentlemen,
Some advise please regarding kilt length. It appears that several of the gentlemen showing the ponies on lead lines are wearing kilts to mid knee or lower. My two kilts were tailored when I was 68" tall. As I aged my stature diminished to 65". I was about to try and shorten my kilts but then I saw these photographs. I don't want to look "trollopy" but shortening a kilt is a difficult task.

Very nice. Great to see what a Highland Pony looks like - all I've seen up until now has been drawn illustrations.

I noticed that too.I suspect that some of the kilt wearers know far more about ponies than kilts! I am not joking! The traditional dress at the "Royal" is the kilt or tweed shooting suit, when showing highland ponies and believe it or not, it is usually too warm to wear the tweed. Also wrestling with a headstrong and nervous pony is not conducive to keeping the kilt in the right place if you don't know the tricks. I rather fancy that there are two gentlemen in the pictures that know how to wear the kilt in spite of everything and they stand out a mile!

No one in their right mind rides a pony,or horse for that matter, wearing the kilt. The Highland pony can be ridden, they are very sure footed and seem to "smell" out the boggy places and avoid them, but they are better known for carrying the deer off the hill after a days stalking. With a special saddle they can carry one stag or two hinds. They were also used, with a large wicker panier on either side of the pony, to carry peat off the moors for fuel in the winter. The same paniers were used to carry food up to the beaters and "guns"on the moor on a grouse shoot and carry the "bag" back to the game larder.
