No one in their right mind rides a pony,or horse for that matter, wearing the kilt. The Highland pony can be ridden,they are very sure footed and seem to "smell" out the boggy places and avoid them, but they are better known for carrying the deer off the hill after a days stalking. With a special saddle they can carry one stag or two hinds.They were also used, with a large wicker panier on either side of the pony, to carry peat off the moors for fuel in the winter. The same paniers were used to carry food up to the beaters and "guns"on the moor on a grouse shoot and carry the "bag" back to the game larder.
