San Antonio
Hi everyone,
I'm going to be in San Antonio Aug 4th - 8th for a conference. But will also have plenty of free time. Any recommendations on good pubs, etc? Also, anything else worth seeing there, beyond the obvious (Alamo, Sea World, Six Flags), etc....

Don't forget the Riverwalk... not sure if you counted that as one of "the obvious". Good place for an evening stroll. Unfortunately, it's been so long since I've lived down there I can't really give much recommendation otherwise.
If you're not adverse to a little extra travel, you can go to 6th Street in Austin, as well. Lots of bars there, and Austin has a reputation for being open-minded and... well... weird

The Riverwalk is great, lots of shops and nice places to eat and drink. I'd recommend Dick's Last Resort and Durty Nelly's Irish Pub on the riverwalk as must sees.

Don't miss the Alamo, take the tour, it is a powerful experience.

It all depends what you like/want to do. There is certainly enough places to eat and drink on the river walk. Don't forget that most places on the riverwalk also have a presence on street level and they can be two completely different experiences. Skip Dick's unless you want to be insulted and go to Mad Dogs.
If your in a group definitely hit up "Howl at the Moon". Dueling pianos do not do it justice.
The Gunther Hotel and the Menger Hotel both have wonderful bars and have long histories with the city.
If you are more into the art scene check out these two great areas

And since you will be here for the first Friday of the month, there will be a lot of activity in South Town. They are both on the "trolley" lines so getting around should not be a problem.
Mission trail is a great place to take in the five original Spanish missions of the city.

I second Mad Dogs. It's on the Riverwalk and the waitresses offer service very similar to the Tilted Kilt!

Very fun... I was just there about a month ago.

Visit Natural Bridge Caverns, north of San Antonio. Great place to cool off. If you can go up to Austin to see the bats at sundown, that would be a good sidetrip too.

Durty Nellies Irish pub on the riverwalk can be fun. It is a piano bar where everyone sings along. The Lion and the Rose is also good. They have a number of locations around San Antonio. I highly recommend the Flying Saucer if you like good beer. They have over 80 on tap and serve somewhere around 200 different beers.

I'll add Waxy O'Conners on the riverwalk. They do the Irish pub bit and the times we've been there had some live music. The food was good and they had some nice whisky. the Lion and Rose pub also has some good food and the waitresses are in mini-kilts. MadDogs is OK but a bit loud for our taste. All these have appreciated the kilt.
