I don't know that making flashes out of the actual ribbon is the right thing to do. Those are meant for the uniform not to be chopped up and recycled. Even though they are a "been there" award they are still official U.S. Military ribbons. Finding similar ribbon or cloth would be another thing to consider.

Can flashes be knitted to resemble the ribbon of a service medal? I know nothing about knitting.

Knitted hose toppers, instead of whole hose, might be worth considering.

Yes, they could. They could at least have the colors of the service ribbon, if not be an (almost) copy of the ribbon.

I appreciate y'all's kind word about the hose I made. The colors of the service bar are the same colors in the Black Stewart kilt Spc. Boyd is getting, so the kit should look pretty good together. Since working these cuffs I've started noticing the Viet Nam service bar bumper stickers around town.

By the way, I typed the stitch count of these cuffs into the Tartan Designer at Scotweb, and it makes a pretty nice tartan. I'm not sure the Viet Nam bar would look very good with all that yellow, but other ribbons might make some interesting tartan options for veterans of various wars or campaigns. As was said above, "Those who know, will know."

Just so we're all clear...

The service bar I copied is awarded for serving in Afghanistan. There is another bar for serving in the Global War on Terror, and according to soldiercity.com, military personnel can choose whether they want that ribbon or the one denoting service in a particular country.
I'm no expert; that's just what I've read. I hope it's correct!
