Ladies and Gents:
I could be all wet about this . . . but so far it's been working for me. I've switched over, in the last year, to a "paleo/primal" diet, and have lost about forty pounds so far. I know that this is just an anecdote, and that even the plural of anecdote is not "data."
Check out Mark's Daily Apple (unsurprisingly, www.marksdailyapple.com). The principles are surprisingly simple: eat real food. Avoid vegetable oils. Avoid processed foods. Eat grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meats.
I'm a big fan of Mark Sisson, check his website every day, got his book, try to live in compliance with the precepts.
Sometimes I'll ask doctors if doctors a hundred years ago understood the human body and how to treat it. They always say no. Then I ask them if they understand the human body and how to treat it. They always say yes. Then I ask them if doctors a hundred years from now will think that today's doctors understand the human body and how to treat it. Then they get mad at me.
My mother was taught in high school that the atom was the smallest particle known to man, and it was by definition indivisible. Dr. Ancel Keys' lipid hypothesis may prove to be just as valid as what my Mom was taught.
I mean no offense. I could be wrong. I could be poisoning myself. There is a ton of literature out there, and I think it's working for me. Eat real food. Wear your kilt. Play. Sleep. We rose to become the apex predators in a very dangerous world. In my lifetime, we just keep on getting sicker, and fatter, and unhealthier. I could be wrong about all of this.
Let a thousand flowers bloom!

my wife and I have been looking into a sort of paleo diet. Trying to stick with grass fed meat and cut out the refined grains.
