Nice video! I enjoyed that.
Hey, I'm tossing a 16 pound sheaf easily, no brainer over a 16 foot branch, and clear another branch that's probably at 20 feet about 4x out of 5. There's another branch above that, probably 24 feet or so that I clear sometimes, but usually smack the sheaf into the branch or graze it.
'zat good, bad, or indifferent for a Master? We never do sheaf down here.
Actually, I just looked at the NAGA standings, and heck, a 22 foot, 16 lb sheaf toss is perfectly respectable.

Not bad for sure! I suggest trying a 20 pounder though. That is what we toss up here in the NW. I should have a post from Prosser tonight or so.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

I just watched your video again and I noticed something.
Look UP, look straight up during the last pull, right before the release in the hammer. Stop your vid *just* at the release point, and look at your head position. You're looking mostly straight ahead, and as you release, your head comes around as you open up your shoulders. Opening up the shoulders is good, but that head position is affecting the lenth of your pull and possibly the size of the orbit of the ball, as well.
Now stop your training partners vid just before HE releases. He's looking straight up.
Looking straight up helps keep your arms long and help you pull "high". This is a key hammer point I picked up at a workshop a few weeks ago.
Look at these videos.

especially Harrison Bailey III....head up at the big pull at the end.

Alan,
You are a genius! I never noticed that. The Bellingham games was a bad example for me. On the first throw was when I tweeked my back. I was in some gnarly pain! But I know exactly what you are saying. The other thing I do is step forward with my right foot instead of toward the field with my left foot. Someone pointed that out in Tacoma. It is kind of like walking out of the WOB position befor letting go of the weight. I have practice tonight and will try to look up!
Thanks,
James

From the looks of your video, it seems like you're trying to do the "Scottish style" of hammer throws. This is what most of the pro's are doing now...big layout, totally loose arms, huge orbit, speed builds during the preliminary winds, basically throwing with your hips doing hula hoop motions and your arms doing almost nothing. You *gotta* look up for that release.
Here's a video of Matt Sanford...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMssfMCMNs0
That's a totally different style, the "American" style. I think Matt was in the US Olympic trials at least twice in Olympic hammer, so he's coming at it differently. Notice the much more upright stance, not so much emphasis on a big orbit, but the MONSTER pull at the end. This is what I've been doing....I'm trying to transition to the style you're doing.
Anyway, but you'll still see that Matt is looking straight up during his phenomenal pull and release. I hope that helps.
I also, fairly often finish off with a step forward with my right foot, rather than a pull back with the left. I'm working on it! You can't do that with hammer boots, though!!!

I am still a little hesitant to strap on the boots. I have the image of a blown out knee in my head. I may give them a shot after Enumclaw. I have about 6 weeks to practice between the Claw and Kelso.
See you then!
