Evening Wear Hose - Hose Tops?

I'm new to the forum and soliciting some opinions. I am wondering what hose are best for my best evening outfit (Montrose Doublet). I can't justify $200+ for a pair of custom made tartan hose to match my kilt - $200 for a pair of socks! Maybe one day...
In the meantime I've read (and agree with!) all the anti white sock posts. I have some plain navy and plain black hose, and also some bottle green which match my kilt. I am happy with all of these but my question is -
should I get some knitted hose tops to pick up the colors in my kilt to wear with these? Or is that more for day wear and should I stick with the plain dark hose for evening wear?

There are sources of quality tartan hose and diced for quite a bit less than two-hundred dollars. I don't have the links handy right at the moment
I think the diced hose tops were decided to be shooting socks, or something like that...

Perhaps you could wear the solid color hose, like the bottle green, but my gut feeling is that you should have tartan or diced with the Montrose Doublet.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

There is a huge difference between $20 kilt hose and $200 kilt hose. With a formal outfit, especially a Montrose Doublet, I would spring for some diced or Argyll hose to complete the look. Is it a lot of money? Well , no, not in the long run. A finely made pair of hose will last you a lifetime and fit you better to boot.
Plus you can get them here for under $200:

I have heard of diced hose from J. Higgins for $65, but the reviews here have been less than flattering and make me skeptical of purchasing a pair even at that price.

I think the plain color hose will work fine, however, diced or Argyll hose are far more traditional for formal wear. If you have a formal event coming up soon, I would go with what you have that looks best with your kilt. Then save for some formal hose down the line.

For a Montrose Doublet I'd say perhaps instead of Argyll hose or hose tops that you consider diced hose like this:

Now that's a good question! I am certainly not the authority, but I think, if they worked with the hose and the jacket I would wear em. I think technically it is said you should wear black, Argyll, or tartan. Dicing is most often associated with military wear, but I think Jamie said that it is not the sole domain of the Highland regiments.
Check out Skye outfitters, they are having some spectacular prices on Argyll and diced hose. I am going there. I have found em for asa high as 260, but that is absurd!!!

					Hey, thanks all!
Skye Outfitters here I come. Their "triced" hose for $120, picking up the main colors of my kilt, would seem quite the go.

Great look by the way! Unfortunately I need to lose a few kilos to look as good in mine, or pull my belt real tight. It isn't a forgiving jacket...

No the Montrose is none too forgiving at all, thanks for the compliment, I wish I could drop a few pounds as well, it would make squeezing into it a lot easier.
