I'll stick to my drumming thanks - but I don't mind if you jingle bob along side of me.

Personally - I'm a big fan of sporran drumming, but if it bugs anyone a small drop of clear silicone will anchor the offending tassles.

Interesting thread James.
I suppose that my first answer is the same I use when asked "what's the best knife?" The answer is, "The one you have with you when you need one."
I agree with Chas, that the setting will dictate one of the required attributes of the sporran. So rather than building a "Dream Sporran" from the ground up, I'm more inclinded to take a sporran I like, and bemoan attribute that it might not have.
I really like the functionality of my Stillwater Nightstalker, but I must admit I'm not crazy about it's appearance for anything but the most casual of settings.
I love my freelander, but wish it had some pockets - or a way to organize the contents. (Beyond "a big pile in a bag.")

I think pockets would improve any sporran! If thay all just had a little space for small stuff like keys and cell phone. My biggest gripe is having to root around for the small items in the bottom.

I've got a Canon 770 IS, perfect for when you can't bring a DSLR. Otherwise, you're going to need to a second bag for the camera.

How big is too big?
I agree that from a practical viewpoint bigger (and compartments) is better. But there comes a point when it just looks too darn ugly - like you've got a handbag hanging out there in front of you.
How big can you get before it is just too ugly?

Most guys carry too much stuff. At the Greenville Games I had the following in my sporran:
Key to the car (rest of keys in the car); a very flat bill fold with cash, driver's license, and two credit cards; card case; Swiss Army knife. All of this stuff fits in my sporran with room to spare.
Back at HQ, unless I was wearing it, my jacket was draped over a chair and in the pocket was my cell phone and an extra car key (just in case).
I think the problem arises when sporrans are too flat-- mine, made of deer hide, has soft sides and is slightly over an inch thick-- or when guys feel they have to carry more stuff around with them than they really need.

The perfect sporran must also be, er um, how should I say this, "a projection of your masculinity", since it hangs right over your crown jewels. It shouldn't look like a woman's purse, or a shapeless leather sack. I won't even get into what Freud would say about a sporran.

Sometimes a sporran is just a sporran.
For everyday use, I use either my black or brown Thorfinn sporrans - cell phone pocket, pen loop, and keyholder up top, and enough room for handkerchief, wallet, glasses case, and digital camera below.
For times when it might be a little too dirty or wet for leather - my SWK Nightstalker. Not quite as much room, but three pockets for compartmentalization and cordura nylon for washability.
For formal - the Thorfinn "Frankenchuck" or the cantle sporran that Turpin is currently making for me. Again - cell pocket and keyholder up top, room in the bottom for my wallet. Frankenchuck will hold the camera too.
