Buckles for kilt straps??

OK I have my X-kilt mostly done but I am wanting to add straps to keep it closed up.... and here is my problem...

I dont want to use leather straps I would much rather the straps be made out of the same material I have used for the kilt SO what kind of buckle should I use and how to make the strap??

I am thinking I could use a regular small buckle and make the strap with metal eyelets or grommets so the holes dont tear out... but thats buying more equipment and such to set the eyelets...


OR finding some type of buckle thats like the one used on Andres Papouseks Kilt thats pictured in the manual(and here) looks to be some type of slip buckle or strap buckle but I cant for the life of me find a nice metal buckle like he used.. I can find plastic ones shaped like that but noting in metal and I would REALLY want to use metal hardware... these stupid straps are whats keeping me from being able to finish my kilt LOL!!! and its driving me nuts

I cant post pictures yet it seems LOL His are just simple metal slider type buckle but shaped alittle different......... Me thinks after writing all that I am going to go with a traditional style buckle and just use eyelets in the strap to make the holes sturdy.... or go with a double D ring style of buckle..... guess I will flip a coin and see what happens....

I have an xkilt with a double d ring strap; I won't make another that way. I agree that using the same material is the answer, mostly for the washabillity factor. You can purchase a small eyelet starter kit with the setter included for only a few dollars at the fabric store. Make sure you make the starter hole as small as you can get the raw eyelet into so it doesn't pull out later; I had that problem on a sporran I made.

And what are you using now for buckles?? are you going the eyelet route and using a normal small buckle??

The d rings hold, although I do have another buckle hidden on the inside of the left hip, but the strap tail is awkward. Perhaps if I had stiffened it it would work/look better.

I'm thinking of using canvas stiffened with buckram or somesuch and eyelets for my next project. I buy buckles at Tandy Leather Factory.

Hey thanks you gave me something to chew on and decide!!!!!

For simplicity I may go with the d rings and stiffen them up with something and maybe look for those metal strap ends to give it nice clean look (will try to find some type of metal strap end either way to be honest...)

but then again I may just go with eylets and a buckle LOL atleast I know if I am going to go with the d rings I will have to stiffen it up with something to keep it from looking all floppy....
