Me thinks after writing all that I am going to go with a traditional style buckle and just use eyelets in the strap to make the holes sturdy.... or go with a double D ring style of buckle..... guess I will flip a coin and see what happens....
I have an xkilt with a double d ring strap; I won't make another that way. I agree that using the same material is the answer, mostly for the washabillity factor. You can purchase a small eyelet starter kit with the setter included for only a few dollars at the fabric store. Make sure you make the starter hole as small as you can get the raw eyelet into so it doesn't pull out later; I had that problem on a sporran I made.
