Fanny conjures up quite different connotations on this side of the pond.

...I caught sight of a guy wearing a semi-formal sporran (this style) with his jeans. I have to say: it looked completely ridiculous. I understand the desire to be "functional." But, I think there are far better ways to do so while in pants.

I have to agree, and nominate Ron's idea as one of the oddest attempts to start a fad yet.

My wife has a small summer purse which is plaid and sporran sized. I mentioned to her that it looked like a small sporran. Here it is on our kitchen table and then again worn as a sporran/fannypack. I won't wear this as a sporran, but I tried it on here wearing shorts only of course. But maybe with a modern utility kilt at a fair. Just thought I would chime in on the fannypack debate. Forgive me elders for suggesting a purse, but the strap isn't half bad.

I hope that setting is in the dark and alone. Just a second opinion.. hopefully you don't get too many "looking goods!" to encourge you due to the fact that many board members find it rude to sometimes tell the disparaging truth.

Sporran in front with pants? No.

On the side,yes, back in college and also when I worked in bars etc as a musician. Those were very simple daywear sporrans, and often attached to my belt; went well with the country western scene.

From what I understand, the sporran, in a simple form, predates the kilt by a long, long time, and is not exclusive to highland attire. I may be wrong about that, so...
