Well yes and no. I would like to see Matt pop on and explain to further.. but sporran is just Gaelic for purse. And as such they have been around forever as a means to carry all manner of things for all peoples. However the currant form of sporran does not look right for anything other than it's intended use. Others may feel differantly, but thats life.
