Hi All,

Received a lightly used US Army from Kilted Carver the other day, and my US Navy from Rocky yesterday. Both are the 5 yard PV casuals. I am stunned by the quality and attention to detail. The fit and drape are also excellent.

What really surprises me is how both kilts feel like they tough as iron, but light and airy, and easy to wear. I'm sold. They seem to be the perfect kilt for blistering hot Texas.

If Only, If Only Rocky would get the USAF Reserve tartan in PV (not the US Forces tartan that Sportkilt is pushing as USAF) and the USMC tartan in PV, I would get a matched set for the Department of Defense. Sorry Coasties, you're in the Department of Homie Security.

I've always said, I feel the PV Rocky uses (from Marton Mills) is the only feasible alternative to wool tartan. It has it's function and place in the kilt world.

I'm personally kind of glad Rocky hasn't offered the "USAF Tartan" in PV. Why? Because then I'd be far too tempted to buy that instead of saving for that custom made, custom woven, 16 oz. beauty. Oh the lust for that one is becoming stronger every day. But, back to the point...

I've gone back and forth on Military tartans...

The one issue with the Military tartans (US Navy, US Air Force, US Army, US Forces, US Coastgaurd but NOT the Leatherneck) is that they're privately registered and owned by Strathmore (US Marine / Leatherneck is an 'OPEN' tartan that anyone can weave). I would have to pay a royalty to Strathmore to have them custom woven and pay more for the material itself b/c they were a custom weave. OTHER companies that offer them in the low end of the market do not pay Strathmore their proper royalty, so they have less overhead, but we would not do that...

For now, the only way to get a proper US Air Force tartan kilt is to purchase it in wool.

Aren't USCG and Hamilton one and the same, or are they just very similar?

Hamilton's on my wish list due to a couple of Clan Hamiltons hanging from my family tree and because of the red and blue tartan (I'm an alumnus of The University of Kansas).

I now have two USAK casuals -- Douglas Mod and American Heritage -- and I love 'em both. Terrific kilts for the hot, humid Kansas summer, and heavy enough I can wear them in the spring and well into fall, too. If I have my way, I'll be picking up several more before it's all said and done: Hamilton, MacLean, Cladish (good fall colors), MacDuff and Warrior.

Oh, yeah -- and my pipe band is now working with Rocky, so sometime soon I'll be getting a premier 8-yard in Ramsay Blue.
