Jacket to wear with Navy tartan

My opinion is that it would lead to confusion. Prince Charlies are typically worn to events where men's attire would call for a tuxedo. So, using that as the go-by, I always picture the suggested jacket worn at a regular tuxedo event, with a pair of tuxedo pants. My opinion is that it would look odd to wear one of the jackets you have mentioned with a pair of tuxedo pants. I think it best to keep separate modern kilts and reenactor gear. I believe it tends to make the kilt look "costumey" rather than distinguished.

Why not wear a Prince Charlie? As far as I know, the Navy, like the Marine Corps, has not adopted an official kilt uniform. Thus, the Navy Edzell tartan should be worn with civilian highland attire. If you want to make a military connection more obvious wear your miniature medals with the Prince Charlie. These are able to be had now with less cost, although if you are looking to cut a more dashing figure I suggest one of the other highland doublets (Kenmore, Sherrifmuir, etc.)

If you're bound and determined to wear something other than normal highland dress with this kilt, I'd suggest the Navy's mess dress jacket. It is cut with a high waist and looks a bit like a Prince Charlie from the front. I don't think that wear with civilian clothes is authorized under the uniform regs, but that doesn't seem to phase most people.

I have been out of the military for 15 years, but my understanding is the jacket is no longer a uniform item if you change the buttons and remove all insignia.

The second jacket is not an officers jacket, it is an "other ranks" (enlisted) pattern shell-jacket with US Cavalry piping from the Civil War period.

As a former reenactor, I agree with David. It's best not mix reproduction kit with a kilt for a "modern" civilian formal function.
