Im having some trouble.

Hello everyone. My name is Jim Edwards. At the moment I only own a UtiliKilt, but I love wearing it. I do however want a "Family" kilt. I have discovered that my Great Great Grandfather came to the US from Wales when he was a child. So with the help of the Intrerwebs I found my family tartan. My problem is I can only find a few places on the web that carry the tartan and they all want a GREAT amount of money for both just bolts of fabric(I was wanting to make a Great Kilt) or a pre-made kilt. So I was hoping someone might be able to help my weak seach-fu and direct me to somewhere that is more affordable.

Hi Jim... welcome to the forum. Could I as what tartan it is as if it is even remotely available it means a mill will make it - even if shops dont generally stock it.

Hi Paul.
I have found places that make it. Its the Welsh Edwards/Edward/Kedwards tartan. They just want so much money for it. One place wanted almost $1000.00 for 10 yards(for the great kilt) and another place wanted 350 pounds(almost $700) for a basic kilt. I was just hoping to find mabye a US maker that wouldnt cost so much or at least get bolts of fabric and try to make my own.

If you make a great kilt from 10 yards of double width fabric you will scarcely be able to move under the weight.

If the fabric is the normal 54inches wide then you will require 4 to 5 yards of it for a great kilt - though that is still a lot of money.

I recommend that you do nothing precipitously, but look around for a while to see what is available - or what might turn up.

Hi Jim. As the tartan is quite rare it is a bit more expensive than stock tartans

This link will give you a kilt for around £260 (including fabric). I'd recommend them and a lot of Americans on the forum have also dealt with them and found their service to be great, quality good and their shipping costs not too high.
It is considered a Welsh tartan and therefore I believe it's made in a special mill which would cost around £100+ for the 8 yards of wool alone.

Or if you're just looking for a 5yard kilt you could have it made for around £160 or so. Use this link:

You may want to enquire of Matt Newsome at the Scottish Tartan Museum. He can get most any tartan woven in a kilt length. He also makes some of the finest box pleated kilts known to man.

from Arizona. What Big Mikey said! I understand that kiltmakers Kathy Lare in New Mexico and Barbara Tewksbury (who is a member here also) can get also get kilt length tartans. Hope these options are helpful. Of course we are assuming that you are in the US.

If you are looking for a regular tailored kilt, check out a St. David's Welsh National Tartan. An USA Kilts casual in a St. David's is an affordable option.

As for a great kilt, you may or may not want a modern tartan. If you are looking for a period Renaissance look, 4-5 yards of a more plain looking plaid may do you nicely (and is MUCH more affordable).
