My first X-kilt
OK, I've got the raw materials. I've got the sewing machine. I've cleared out the living room and made space on the (clean) floor.
So tomorrow morning bright and early I'm starting my kilt.
It's going to be khaki and pretty much a stock x-kilt. I'll try the fancy ideas on my next kilt.

Thanks. I'll definitely be asking a lot of questions. I'm using the floor in front of my PC, so you guys will literally be within arms reach.

Me too!!! Just got my first a week ago (a SportsKilt) and I started an x-kilt this afternoon. Only got the material washed and ironed and a hem pinned in place on the long edge; but it's a start. It's going to be a charcoal grey stone-washed poly/cotton. It's not quite as heavy as the denim I wanted; but to test my sewing expertise and ability to follow written instructions, it will suffice.

You are off on a wonderful adventure sir!
I also want to take just a moment to note the debt of gratitude we all owe Alan H for creating the XKilt design and instructions for one and all.
Alan - you're one class act.

OK, the day so far.
Started measuring and cutting at 08:00. Completely lost track of time and only realised how late it was when I started getting hungry.
I must say that Alan's instructions are super easy to follow. Did make one or two mistakes, but nothing a thread cutter couldn't fix.
I'm now stuck until further notice. Broke the damn sewing needle, and can't find a replacement. I'm busy stitching the pleats at the fell so hopefully I'll finish the kilt by tomorrow evening.
Anyway, Alan, I just have to say that you sir are a true gentleman. Letting us mere mortals in on the secrets of how to make decent kilts. Thank you.

But not a stick of chalk in the whole store when I stopped there this evening. Measuring and marking will have to wait a bit. Might have to just run over to Hancock tomorrow and get a dress makers pencil.

I know Alan H loves his chalkboard chalk but I've never found it satisfactory. Won't hold an edge, and gives me the shivers when I try to use it! Tailor's chalk is not too expensive, just the plain stuff that comes in a plastic carrier with little V-shaped metal edge to sharpen it against. For a little more money, I found a good marking tool in with the quilting notions -- a rolling wheel that lays down a really thin line of powdered chalk. Just trying to figure out how to turn that box of chalkboard chalk into fine enough powder to substitute for the refills LOL
