Newbie Kilt Maker from Saint Paul, MN

    Hello,
I'm Serena. Newbie kilt maker. I'm here to learn and not to try to sell kilts. I'm doing that pretty well on my own. I believe in learning a craft and that's what I'm doing. I hope to get to know some elder kilt makers and expand my abilities. I hope to make some friends and earn some respect. I know it is to be earned. I'm a humble person with a good outlook on life and a great sense of humor.

Thank you for reading my thread.

    Serena

    Hello Serena

What has brought you to kilt making?

Do you have a general background of making clothes, or is it that kilts caught your attention?

I began with 'ordinary' garments, but I love the style of construction of the Indian sari and the English smock, and then I found the Scottish kilt.

I make my own very simple reverse Kingussie style kilts, but don't have time to make them for others - rather selfishly I would rather hand sew my own kilts, hand knit my own jerseys and hose, than set out to work on similar garments for others.

Yes the apron is a bit longer because I asked for that for modesty reasons while working.

I wish I had a camera that took good pictures. ChubRock has been kind enough to post pics of the kilt I made for him a couple of days ago. I do have kilts that I made myself posted on my profile. I'll add some here, but the quality of the pictures is not as good as I would like.

I've only been sewing for a little less than a month. Total. I never have owned a sewing machine before or sewn anything before. I just decided that I would make my own kilts because I'm the sole provider for my little clan of 4 and couldn't in all good conscience pay $350 for a garment. So, I decided to make them.

I love it. It the best therapy I have ever had. I love my sewing machine. I love the feeling of creating a great piece of art and the admiration others express for what I made with my own hands and mind.
