			Edinburgh kilters

I will be travelling to Scotland in September. If I were to take my own tartan fabric (about 9 yards) is there a kilt maker in Edinburgh who could make a kilt? Who would be best? How much time would it take and would I need multiple fittings?

Why? There are several talented kilt makers on this forum in the USA who can make a kilt for probably a better price than the UK - at least you won't have to pay the VAT!

I do own two kilts by US based makers and won't rest until I have a Tewksbury, a Lare and Newsome box pleat in my arsenal, but for me with a couple of the family related tartan kilts, it mattered that it be made in Scotland. Maybe that's a bit of overly romantic fluff, but it was (and is) an honest feeling. And I have to say, in both instances the prices were competitive... (partly due to the fact that I got lucky regarding duties).

 And importantly:

					Welcome Colin,
You don't say where on the planet you are. I would recommend emailing the Traditional Kiltmaker's Guild at INFO@TRADITIONALKILTMAKERSGUILD.CO.UK for the names of members near where you'll be. They're upgrading their website and if that doesn't work I'm sure Kathy Lare would know the other guild members near where you'll be.

Or, as mentioned, check with her and save all the taxes and tariffs if you're in the States. www.kathyskilts.com. She's in Albuquerque but ships worldwide.

from Edinburgh. There is only one firm I can recommend - http://stewart-christie.com/ as they have made and altered my kilts as well as bespoke jackets. They will certainly make you a kilt to be proud of. They will take 6-8 weeks and will only require to measure you.

If you are a Non-EU resident and are exporting the garment outside of the EU then VAT is not applicable - you sign a declaration to that effect.

I had an old military tartan kilt taken apart and re-made to fit me by Celtic Craft Centre on the Royal Mile, which is down an alley-way just down from Hector Russell's shop. They did a magnificent job. The cost 5 years ago was about £120.00.
