ND Kilt Maker

I need to get my Tank altered as it's too big for me. Has anyone had any dealings with the kilt maker Gus Perkins of: "Bear in Mind Kilts and Quilts?
Or can anyone recommend a kilt maker that is willing to make alterations.

Kathy Lare of albuquerque altered two of mine that were too big by moving the buckles/straps for a reasonable fee, and now they fit fine. her website has contact info:

She is also an exceptionally well trained, highly skilled traditional Scottish handsewn kiltmaker with reasonalbe prices and a phenomenal reputation. She is very good to work with from my experiences. There will be a Kathy Lare handsewn in my future collection some day.

She is an experienced kiltmaker who recently finished an apprenticieship with Ann Stewart (one of two apprentices of hers on this website) who did a beautiful handsewn for me a few months ago, and who I know also does alterations, jsckets, skirts, etc... I think her work is top notch, and she is just building her own business so shouldn't be too backed up with other work to fit you in relatively quickly. Tell her Jeff said hello if you call her.

My son had two less than enjoyable dealings with Gus who claims to be a Master Kiltmaker. The work that I saw was poorly done and the attention to detail left much to be desired...we had to make a claim with the credit card company to recover funds. Your mileage may vary. Caveat emptor.

Thanks for the heads up Rob
I had my doubts after talking with him. His kilt terminology was little off. I also checked his website, it was the bit about Scottish sheep having softer wool thereby making a better kilt that seemed a little odd to me.
Then again, what do I know

I have no experience with him, but I just went to his website...

Speaking not as a kiltmaker, but as a someone who likes shopping on-line, I generally choose NOT to order anything from a website that automatically plays music and has needless animated graphics on it. Just a personal pet peeve.

Speaking as a kiltmaker and a retailer in tartan, I find this statement utterly flabbergasting:
"Keep in mind that true Tartans start at $65 dollars a yard to $250 dollars a yard. Each Kilt is made of 9 yards of fabric."

$250/yd??? really??? The most expensive tartan cloth we sell at the museum shop is $95/yd and that is retail cost. One would think a professional kiltmaker would be ordering his cloth wholesale. Elsewhere on his site he states that his kilts range in cost "between $585 to $2250 dollars." Wow. :-(

Would you pay over two grand for a kilt made by the person responsible for this statement?
"Tartans are weave with Highlander wool, which comes from sheep that only graze on grass and there wool is very soft. It is not like what we have here in the US where your wools are heavy and itch."

Questionable science and worse grammar and spelling. Caveat Emptor indeed.

For that kind of money, those $2200 kilts had better balance my checkbook, clean my house and make a mean margarita.

It's times like this that I ask myself what poor boob would pay that kind of money for a kilt, and then I answer myself: "People who don't have access to a forum like this and experience kilters like these."
