When I was a child, my mother used to wear a wartime designed dress. A light buff colour with contrasting collars and cuffs. The sleeves were 3/4 length. I don't know what the style of collar is called, but it was like a mandarin collar but turned down (does that make any sense). Any way the collar and cuffs were made from scrap material and buttoned on with tiny hidden buttons. (clothing rationing was still in force) There was a green stripey set; A plain maroon set; a Royal Stewart set and one with thousands of tiny dots that I really hated. Any way the point being that if one was clever, you could have one garment with various additions.

Yes, I can see that -- my sister had a wool coat with detachable fur collar, similar construction. Might keep me from having to make the jacket myself, just find a suitable ready-made and fiddle up the trimmings!
