DIY Cantle?

Howdy all,

Call me a bit nutty, but I came across one of these in the store...


...and my mind saw a stainless steel dress cantle made from 1/2 of the lid. It's too bad that they are only 5" wide.

Here's my thought:

The cantle seems to be the big piece missing when any of us sit down to craft a dress sporran. We can invest a chunk of $$ in buying a nice one, scavenge one from an older sporran, or cobble one together on our own. Personally, I'm getting tired of braiding mine. I want shiny metal to play with. I've toyed with the idea of making a good silicone mold and pouring them from pewter. But that means having to learn yet another skill at the expense of work time. It would be much faster to cut one from a nicely polished piece of stainless steel that's already the correct size and shape. Then I need only determine how to mount it on the bag....which won't take much. Think of how well it might accept engraving by a local shop.....

You might also want to look at pie crust shields. They're shaped just like that lid, except the center is already cut out. You can probably find them in stainless, and if not, one might make a nice practice piece to work out the engraving.

I think pie crust shields might be on the large side, unless you could find pot pie size ones. Do they make those??

So, we'll start with this.



...and kill two birds at once. I'll use the lid for cantles, and the body for a camping water heater- spout on top, stainless wires through holes in the lip, hung over the campfire- pour cold water in, an equal amount of hot water comes out the top spout.

While I'm at it, I'll probably make the cantle easy to remove, so I can switch it from bag to bag. Does anyone have a suggestion for matching stainless cones?

Kevin, I like the way you think! Last year I was in a junk shop and came across a brass stamped tray that seemed about 6"-7" dia. and about 1/2" high. I got it for 50 cents and had the idea of making a Victotian stye hinged sporran. Well, I've got it 95% done and only have the latching catch to figure out. I think it's coming out pretty good for a first attempt and will post pictures as soon as the latch is done.

So keep on looking and you may find the perfect item to use. I think that 6 1/2" dia would be the smallest I woul use. My tray was 7" dia and that seems about right to be able to get you hand into the sporran.

I do want to get it done for the New Hampshire games next month. I even left the old brass patina to keep with the vintage look.

No dice on this route.

The dimensions were not correct. The diameter was stated at 5.75" which is close enough to 6" to go. It turned out just about 5 1/8" wide. Atleast it will look nice in the privy.
