    New Irish Bar in Dupont

I work down at Camp Murray and occasionally head south to Dupont for lunch. Within the last few weeks, a new pub & restaurant called "McNamara's" has opened (just off the Center St. exit off I-5). Had lunch there today. It is a family run place, and they are trying to bring a little Irish culture to the community. Far too many places around here call themselves Irish pubs, but have nothing Irish about them but a name and a kelly green leprechaun.

Not only was the place decorated with some Irish nostalgia (although it still has that brand new feel), but they have the whole gamut of Irish beers on tap and 14 Irish whiskeys! I would have a better report for you, but I was in uniform and in the middle of the duty day. More on this very soon.

I talked a bit with them about getting some Irish music in. They seemed very interested, and in fact have a corner of the bar area already set up for it and decorated with instruments hanging from the ceiling and on the wall. They were unfamiliar with Irish music sessions, and I told them I would pass the word if they might be interested in hosting one. They were very agreeable to that as well.

I think I just found my new favorite place. Perhaps we can break it in with a kilt night?

    Mike

Just reading the header I thought you were from Takoma Park, Maryland, and were telling us about a new Irish pub in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC! Oh well, never mind.

Did ye hear that Kevin O'Brien died last night at the Guinness Brewery? He fell in the vat and drown. We went to tell his widow what happened, and she said, "My God, it must have been a terrible death." I said, "I don't think so, he got out three times to go to the bathroom."

I have now been down to McNamaras three times, once for lunch and twice for serious business. Both times were weekday happy hour times. The crowd is gathering nicely, and the beer is good.

One of the waitresses came from Pints & Quarts, and English Pub in Lacey (and now another on my list to check out). The wait staff is good, but so far, no one can make a shamrock in the top of my beer. They have a pay by the song DJ machine (I hesitate to call it a jukebox), and while they have a pretty good collection of Irish & Celtic tunes (new and old), at $.75 a song it adds up quick. They have indoor shuffleboard, but I haven't seen anyone use it yet.

It is still new and finding its groove, and I believe more research will be required before a final report can be given. Work just never seems to end.
