Another thing to consider is that the angle of the camera when taking photos of groups is generally from eye level looking down. That would tend to make kilts seem a bit lower than they actually are. My kilts all fall at the top or just below the top of my knee, but in many photos of me the kilt appears to fall at the center of my knee.
