Well... I was just thinking of what you said, the people who know about kilts are mostly in the Highlands.

It is not surprising really Ted, don't forget that the kilt is Highland Scots attire, after all. It is only a fairly recent idea, perhaps in the last 100 years or so, that the rest of Scotland have taken to the kilt.So it is hardly surprising that kilt conventions have been watered down and it is hardly surprising that us Highlanders are, I think, fighting a tough battle keeping those kilt wearing conventions in tact.

When I vacationed in Scotland nine years ago, it was my desire to blend in and not to stand out as a "tourist." So I wore.... blue jeans! Fit right in.

You Scots better not be watering down the blue jeans wearing conventions and traditions! That's our national dress!

Well... That's the problem, we can't complain about how everyone is wearing jeans because we wear them every which way that is possible.

Tight across the rump and crotch, not too low on the hips, loose in the legs, and about four inches too long...so that the legs will "stack" when worn with boots, and fray when not.

Oh Gosh, I cannot tell you where Clan Ross hail from. I am sure a member here will put you right, or of course "Google" should help.
Dumfriesshire is in Scotland on the border with England on the west side.Lowlands,or "border country".
Going from North to South on the mainland of Scotland The Highlands start at the North and going South, finish about at Stirling. If you look at that section the centre and West and the islands just West of the mainland is roughly the Highlands and Islands.
The lowlands are roughly between there and the English border.
The kilt was Highland attire until about 150 years ago when the lowlanders took to wearing it. Until then, the lowlanders did not wear the kilt and were in fact rather scathing about it.
I am generalizing here, but that should give you a rough idea.
