I'm from the red hills of Georgia (the US State, not the former Soviet satellite). I've seen the middle east (Bloody HOT!), Italy (Oh, the girl who sold me ice cream! If only I could have told you!), Ireland for an instant, England ( the scale of history surrounded me always. And what is 'Pret a Porter' anyway?), Scotland (Where sunset at Edinborough Castle is amazing!).
I want a place in the foggy, Blue Ridge mountains. It feels OLD to me. A place that has a bit of wisdom to it. I suppose that I aspire to wisdom myself.

The climate on the south coast of Wales is damn near perfect. The people are pretty nice too. They even have cilts. (that's a spelling accident waiting to happen)

I love North Carolina - from the incredible mountains, to the cities and the countryside, to the magnificent Outer Banks and beaches. I love Nova Scotia, from the incredible mountains to the cities and the countryside, to the magnificent beaches and rocky shoreline.
I could be endlessly happy in either, or both, forever. It says a lot about a place to say that you want to stay in the place(s) in which you grew up.

My utopia is where I am at right now, the Northwest corner of Washington state, in the foothills of the Cascades. I have heard that the climate here is quite similar to the highlands of Scotland. I have lived here most of my life, except for a brief sojourn in south Florida. Moved back here to what some call "God's country."

Except for the occasional 6.9 earthquake, fire storms, droughts, and floods, there is no place I would rather be; my home, California. Any questions why I stay here, just take a look at Alan's recent trip to the Sierras.

Interestingly enough, I was just thinking about this yesterday though I didn't see the thread until this evening.
I have traveled a fair portion of the globe, and lived in a number of states and countries. I've usually found that I enjoy where I'm at, though it sometimes take a bit of time to get used to the heat, cold, rain, snow, the flatness, the steepness, the humidity, etc, etc. Sometimes it even takes a bit of time to learn to accept the people.
I was thinking that if I picked somewhere in Scotland it would be Glencoe. Something about that area speaks to me. If I were to pick the States, it would be somewhere out West (where I grew up) . But I can't say as how there is a particularly special place - they are all special in their own ways.
Utopia, to me, is more a state of mind - a level of contentment - rather than a physical place. These times come and go - often without any warning. The mind is at ease and all is well in the world - at least for a few hours.

There is a lot to be said favorably about a lot of places, but it mostly comes down to roots and being close to those who love you. If I can be close to them, other things are good, too.
Jock, I think that's what you're saying. Being around grandkids is one of life's greatest blessings.

Ah, Jock, you do cause one to think. You asked: "where else in the world would I want to be? For me the fishing, shooting, scenery and company are a must, so where?"
I divide my year now between the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Strathdearn in Scotland, and Filisur/Davos in Switzerland. Family and friends in all three, and as for fishing, shooting and scenery.... Why would I want to add anything to that lot?

I didn't know Florida used to be called Argyll!
As long as it's warm, hot, humid, and not cold, I don't mind it.
But, nothing compares to right here at home.
