Hadn't needed one until recently, work & motorcycle related injuries haunting me from time to time (yeah, I've been a bit hard on my body).
For serious trail hikes I'd sometimes pick up a likely looking branch for a makeshift staff, but I'm on the lookout for something more lasting & robust. They're nice to have if one encounters a rogue stray dog, or once in the blue moon a big cat --- it happened to a pair of ladies out for a walk around a nearby lake. Luckily one had a staff & fended the beast off!
