Kilt Accessory Themes

The only theme I like is to wear as many hand-made or unique items as I can manage- I guess that is an anti-uniform theme of sorts…

I have a very skilled friend here who lives close by...I am thinking of having her make me an accesory... she's actually a jewellery by trade, so....could be fun.

I figure I'll just base accesory on mood.... I got a feeling I wouldn't even always wear a sporran.

As the resident contrarian here I will pipe in with a slightly different bent. I do have three "themes" as regards accessories and usually tent do follow them but not to excess. I have clan crest cap badge, belt buckle, day sporran, sgian and sword kilt pin. I also have similar sets of thistle themed(no sporran) and lion rampant themed accessories, although most are more artistic than the simple repetitive clan crest pattern. I also have a brand new set of Hawick thistle motif topped cream hose (the giant thistles that go all the way around the hose tops, not just the two little ones) that I have not worn yet but will soon. I have a variety of other more individual items that are not themed that I can mix in as well.

I don't strictly wear the themes independently but do like the look together for the most part. For me it is easier as I am tall and large thus providing some separation of each piece from the others in space, except for the belt buckle and sporran. I think having the themes allows one to have mroe options on choosing what to wear in any given situation or mood---themed, usually for more dressy situations with a jacket, or mixed or non themed with the more usual casual wear situations. I am still breaking in my style tendencies though as I acquire more accessories and experience.

Not wear a sporran,eh? This is yet another thorny question! I think you said somewhere that you were going to wear a tartan kilt, Gunn, I believe you said.

There are some, that consider that you are undressed without a sporran with your tartan kilt.Some would even say that without the sporran, you are just wearing a skirt. Others, no doubt, would think otherwise.You, of course, will make up your own mind.

Actually for first kilt I am getting a Wilson tartan, sept of the Gunns (with reasonable lineage, not fantasy) haha. I figure possible for a second kilt I'd get a Gunn, as it looks alot like the blackwatch, which i am a fan of.

I am glad about the heads up on the sporran though, it's true. Formally of course I'd always wear one, i think it'd be more casual days where I wouldn't, possibly even when I'm alone.

If only the trees are around to see it, is it a skirt? :P

The thing about a sporran is generally it finishes the look, however with the unique way that you walk a sporran may be a hindrance. I'd try it both ways if I were you, I'd also try moving the sporran to one side which may be more comfortable.

Yes, ziggy, as you can see from the responses, there's such a thing as trying to look too Scottish and looking instead like a walking ad for a clan crest shop.

The good think about Scottish attire is that you don't have to worry about being "matchy-matchy."

You know what I got to thinking about that too actually. I know when i travel I normally wear my waist pack to the side, the sporran may be no different for practical reason...it's really going to depend how heavy it is!

If I do wear it in front I would wear it as high as I can get away with, lest it be jumping all over the place. Other thing is I took a semi dress..... as even people knowing me wouldn't be surprised that I'd do that with a PC....I still think you can get away with it.

Theme? I match my belt buckle to my kilt pin. That's it for a theme. I match colors, but that doesn't count. Also, since I'm not a Scot- I'm a Coloradoan with Scots blood- I feel no need to match clan crest items. I have a stag belt buckle/ kilt pin set from USA Kilts. I have a MacLeod pin that I wear from time to time, but otherwise, I like to stick with things that are unique or at least very different. This is my theme- if you don't like me, then leave me alone.
