Be carful where you JONES for your next kilt

I am working at a telework center (office away from the office) today. When I got in I heard there was not coffee, not that it wasn't made there was NO COFFEE.

When the manager of the center came in it was mentioned that there was not coffee, and he went back to look. When he returned he said that he thought we were saying that coffee wasn't made, but, he realized that we meant there was no coffee in the "can."

I said that if it was that we were simply JONESING for coffee we would have figured out how to make something.

One of the other guy here looked at me and said "Jonesing?" He had not heard the term before. I told him it means to have a strong desire for something.

I was curious about how the term originated, was it based on keeping up with the Jones or where. Off to the Web. One site has me a little concerned.

The US Office of National Drug Control Policy page on Street Terms defines jonesing as "Need for drugs."

I could see a US Government employee (and I are one) hearing someone say that they were "Jonesing for a Newsome tank" and decide that he had heard a new drug term. The next thing you know you are being followed by a person in dark sunglasses waiting for the late night exchange of the Newsome Tank.

If you see abbreviations, initials or acronyms you do not know the Xmarks FAQ section on abbreviations may help.

I worked with gangs in inner city Chicago for four years in the 80's so I'd heard the term used in it's originally context - I think it originally developed in the context of heroin use. But it has come to be used in a wider context e.g. kilt addiction.

Well dang! Imagine the difficulty that person in dark glasses will have if he decides to frisk you in a tank. Wow.

Sounds like black ops to me!

As another Federal employee I will also be careful as to how and when I use the term.

Jonesing is the craving for methamphetamines specifically. Or crank if you're looking for a bit of street cred.

I had that happen to me in an airport once. The security guard complained about all the pleats. I was wearing an 8 yard, 16 oz wool. The pleats are numerous and deep. I just grinned as he searched it. He commented about what a pain it was to search all of those, and all I said was "That'll learn ya."

Anyway, back on topic... I see the use of the term "jonesing" as totally appropriate in the context of kilts. They are truely an addiction...
