Kilt Accessory Themes

I tend to lean toward the more subtle. The kilt is statement enough. One or two small tokens of affiliation are enough. A cap badge or kilt pin or other crested/themed item is enough for me.

When I first went kilted I looked like a walking billboard for my clan: clan bonnet badge, clan t-shirt, clan kilt pin.

Since then I've toned it down quite a bit. The bonnet badge remains, but the rest has gone by the way side

Actually i have been looking around, I will already have a celtic knot belt buckle I really like... what are your thoughts on celtic knot design for accesories? Fairly neutral... but has a charm to it I think. It's just that few people mention it.

In my opinion I see nothing wrong with the Celtic Knot. I have seen it utilized in lieu of a clan crest badge on the bonnet, as a kilt pin, and on the flap of a sporran -- though not all 3 at the same time mind you

As matter of fact I have a rather nice Welsh made Celtic Knot that I plan to have incorporated upon the flap of my next sporran

The thing about a sporran is generally it finishes the look, however with the unique way that you walk a sporran may be a hindrance. I'd try it both ways if I were you, I'd also try moving the sporran to one side which may be more comfortable.

I almost never disagree with McMurdo, but I think "the thing about a sporran is generally" having a place to put your stuff!

A kilt just doesn't look right to me without a sporran, but no matter the look, I have to have somewhere for my keys, wallet, etc. One thing for sure, you'll never be upbraided for having a sporran on.

The only clan accessory I ever wear (and only with one of my kilts) is a kilt pin with a small clan badge on it. But you really have to look closely to see what clan it is. I like to think that my tartan should be enough of an identifier.

Personally I would never wear more than 1 clan crested item. Its a nod to the family history not a pile of metal IMO. If I wear an Irish kilt I will wear something like a reid kilt pin or a Wallace tartan with a harp buckle to show my lineage so to speak. When any one asks about the mash I just explain I'm a complicated guy with a lot of roots to tie in lol.

AS for the sporran I would not go out without one you need to hide the tackle and the bigger the sporran the better.

That's an interesting reason to have to wear a sporran :P I thought that's what the heavyweight cloth was for! :P

I refuse to state the obvious reply why Heavy weight material even a military tank is never enough lol.

The fact is you will always get some kind of bulge even with heavy weights, always when you least expect them or when you move at a strange angle, usually when talking to the Vicars wife or some such moment.

Those of us in the social group "Kilted Gentlemen of Substance" have discovered, inadvertently, a solution to the "bulge problem" Bruno so eloquently describes above, in that we have each built a sizable shelter over our "important tools", said shelter called in common circles a "potbelly" (I call mine my next of kin since I tend to be investing so much in it lately). This well earned physical attribute unique to our brethren generally allows the kilt aprons to hang a little further out from our pelvic gurdle and the "bits" of concern. But then, even we usually wear a sporran, for traditions sake if no other reason.
