White Tail Sporran
Ok...I've been inspired by this site...now I need to figure how to locate a specific subject. Until then...can someone direct on how to make a sporran out of a white tail deer hide. I've had it cured and sitting around for about 20years. It still has the hair attached. Note: I've have never worked with leather/hide before.

Congratuations on keeping that deer hide around for 20 years! Did you ever pull it out of the trash? In the trash, back out. Back in the trash, back out?
I am not a leathersmith- only a collector of hides, waiting to pounce when the time is right. I can't give you the guidance you need, but a quick search of the forum will give you lots of previous peoples patterns and experiences.
Good luck!

That's funny...
It's been a few years...and many deer, but I learned a good lesson....no more hides...I give them away so I don't have to remove them from the trash...nevermore!

Look around in the forum for patterns, or google. I found a free pattern looking for traditional sporran pattern, good format. I can't find the link right now. I was gifted a coyote pelt this week and hope to start to turn it into a sporran soon. Good luck

That's wonderful. Sporrans are meant to have character, or so I believe. Why not a white tail?

IMHO understanding how to work with leather is more important than finding a pattern to follow. If you know how to put the pieces together, then your imagination and creativity will lead you to the pattern that works for you.
I learned how to stitch leather using a Tandy leather company kit. The kit included a number of basic leatherworking tools, needles and thread, and the book "How to hand stitch leather". After studying the book and making a few simple projects, I was able to apply the lessons to all kinds of new gear, such as arrow quivers, sporrans, binocular cases, etc.

Here's a link to the book I have. It's excellent.

It looks like Tandy no longer offers the starter kit that I purchased years ago, or I just can't find it on their site. I'll keep looking.

I just found someone with several pieces of white tail here in town! It's locally taken hide, which is important to me. He calls the pieces scraps because they're small- just right for sporrans- so he's just giving them to me instead of throwing them away. Now all I need to do is fugure out how to work with the stuff!
