I must say that I can't overstate how much this discussion has opened my eyes to PV kilts.
I am really looking into a kilt for both my son and I, so this is pointing me in an affordable/acceptable direction. Both of us are big guys so this also looks like a way to stay a little cooler and get into a kilt quicker.

Great discussions and answers everybody...thanks!!! The one thing I'm kind of stumped by is that the USA Kilts PV doesn't come in the Tartan I was looking at (unless there are more options not listed)....MacLaren! It's odd that USA Kilts have so many more options than SWK, but the one I was looking for is offered by SWK and not USAK. Hmmmmm.

Just to throw in another opinion, I own a couple of USAK semi-trad PV kilts and a couple of SWK kilts in heavy weight wool. I wear the PV kilts to highland games (as a spectator, not an athlete) because I don't have to worry so much about spills (they have a teflon coating) or stains. I save my wool kilts for more social occasions.

The kilt I'm in right now, and most every night for relaxing, is an SWK acrylic black stewart. It is softer and more comfortable than PV or wool. I would never wear it out any more, because the pleats aren't sharp and because it pills badly, but for comfort at home it can't be beat.

I believe that this is because they are of two different materials, SWK is acrylic and USA Kilts is PV. Each weaving mill weaves different tartans in their chosen material. Many of the very popular tartan will be available from both. However, for the less popular tartans the various mills decide which ones they wish to weave.

You may want to check with USA Kilts, MacLaren may be available in PV and Rocky has just decided not to carry it as one of his standard tartans. It never hurts to ask and Rocky is always helpful.

Edit: I just did a quick look at Marton Mills and did not see a listing for MacLaren in PV. 1) I think this is where USA Kilts gets their PV 2) there may be another source of MacLaren that Rocky knows about

If you see abbreviations, initials or acronyms you do not know the Xmarks FAQ section on abbreviations may help.
