    Day 11 – Touring Glasgow

I am very grateful to Chris’s suggestion that I spend the night in Glasgow in my departure from Scotland to France. I had only been to Glasgow’s airport before in 2004. So, I haven’t been to the city. I enjoyed immensely my afternoon tour of the downtown area. It was delightful.

George Square is awash with statues of Scotland’s famous.

Day 11 – Touring Glasgow – Glasgow Cathedral

    Glasgow Cathedral - St. Mungos
Although, I was unable to tour inside the Cathedral being after hours, click here for a tour of it by Scottish historian, David R. Ross.

Day 11 – Touring Glasgow – High Street

It was time for dinner. I had promised my Scottish piper friend, George that while in Glasgow I would go to his friend, Dimitri’s restaurant Zobra’s. George told me it was on High Street near the Clock Tower. Easy enough, I was near High Street and a clock tower should be easy to find.

Placing my order with the waiter, Dimitri appeared from the back and came up to me and said, “You are the Virginian!” Aye, I replied I’m from Virginia. He said, George called and told me to expect you. I would not be able to empty my glass of ouzo. Some of the best Greek food I’ve ever eaten.

I also did some shopping and was able to get a off the rack Lovet blue Crail Jack and vest at Hector Russell’s. I also bite the bullet and purchased a nice evening canticle sporran. Moira the sales associate assisted with my considerations in what to buy. I am appreciative of her insightfulness.

My day in Glasgow was successful. I stayed the night at the Holiday Inn at the Airport, so it would be easy enough to walk over to catch my plane to Geneva where Robert, Ancienne Alliance would pick me up to take me to his home in the French Alps. At the bar that evening, being kilted I responded to many a questions from Americans going home. Jealous that I had another card to play – France! I was invited to the table of a group of Cunninghams. There the president of the society shared he had a few drams with Dougie MacLean from the Caledonia whisky bottle he had on stage when he performed at the Gathering. What a lucky guy.

    France here I come!

Well Ern, that was a fantastic report of your holiday in Scotland,
you packed a huge amount into your 2 week stay, and all credit to you,
you not only planned the places you visited for your benefit,
but to the interest of others on this forum, making this thread so much more than just holiday snapshots, for those genuinely interested in Scotland, it's history and traditions and not just dressing up in a kilt, the content here must have been a revelation and should form the basis and reference points to many a future thread.
Sadly I feel a minority of members have taken the time and trouble to comment, but I sincerely hope your efforts and achievements are appreciated by all.
Finally I just want to add that it was a pleasure to spend time with you, your enthuiasm and interest for Scotland was much admired, a real friendship was formed during the time we spent together and I look forward to your next visit.

    Chris

Great photos of George Square - alas seagulls on top of statues are a very common problem!
