The "Loud MacLeod" gets a lot of guff on this forum but I love it. I have some unconfirmed ties to the clan and would be proud to sport it either way. Yeah, its bright, but it is still a beautiful tartan. I have seen much much more ummm how to put it "unique" tartans which I would never wear. The bands look great and they wear the uniforms well.

I am with BB on the guff aspect of the Clan MacLeod tartan. It is very distinctive and as such is one to be proud of wearing. It looks good on the band and is well suited to the F-H C.A.G. Many of the tartans are derived from the Black Watch, and as such have very little that is different from each other. It takes a MacNaughton or Cunningham before the tartan has enough unique points to be easily and distinctly identified. I wear the MacNeil of Barra ancient tartan. Many, who are not well versed on tartans and thread counts, can not tell it apart from the Lamont, Black Watch, Fraser, or Campbell. It is all blue and green to the general public here. Be proud of the MacLeod it is a well designed and distinctive tartan.

How do you figure? There are more than 5,500 tartans listed with the Tartan Authority. Of the 9 tartans that I would wear, not one shares even a similar color scheme with Blackwatch.

Just had to post this. I am wearing the Loud Macleod on a Preston Kilt night earlier this year. Good job we were all wearing Dandelions, otherwise we would never have recognised each other.

Dixiecat - is this the one you mean:
Oskie Wee Wee
Oskie Waa Waa
Holy Mackinaw
Tigers... Eat 'em RAW!!

Yes, but do you know why I would quote that here in a 'loud' MacLeod thread?
BTW, what's the tartan of the gentleman to the right of you? With the blue and yellow?

Hi Dixiecat,
Try as I might, I can't work out why you quoted it. So - tell all. What does it mean and why is it there?
That is Philip.S.Tibbetts and the tartan he is wearing is the 'Halesowen District Tartan'. He approached Halesowen District Council with the idea of getting a district tartan produced. They said yes provided he did it all. So he did. He designed it; registered it; had it woven and finally made into a kilt. The District Council is currently luke-warm and can't really see a need. That might be the only kilt ever made.
This is from the Scottish Register of Tartans:
Tartan Details - Halesowen
The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Halesowen" tartan is shown below.
STA ref: 7661
STWR ref: 3279
Designer: Not Specified
Tartan date: Not Specified
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
Category: District
Restrictions:
Registration notes: Possible district tartan if proof of acceptance is provided. Based on the mediaeval version of the Halesowen flag in which the main colour is royal blue. In the centre is a band of white for the chevron with a narrow thread 'outline' in gold. Later there is three further thin one thread gold bands - these represent each of the fleur-de-lys. The darker blue section was added to make the overall design look more balanced and has sometimes been used as a sporting colour in the town as well as of royal blue.

Phillip is currently trying to persuade all Districts to have a tartan.

Chas
