Star Trek vs. Star Wars

You have to admit that Star Wars has a better story. I mean, the new Star Trek movie was good (really good), but Star Wars has that classic myth feel about it that makes it irresistible.

I'm fairly sure we can scrape together a list of six ST movies that equal or exceed the six SW movies overall. Maybe that's not fair, since there are more ST movies to pick from (which says something in itself). So, we'll let the SW team also pick from the Ewok TV movies, the Droids cartoon series (tho' Trek has a cartoon series, too), and the infamous Holiday Special.

About the story, well, that's it. Star Wars has a story. Star Trek's been around for 40 years, there's lots of stories there, some good, some bad, and many of them are just as 'mythical' as Star Wars. Add Shakespeare, and all kinds of other sources. And Gilgamesh, if you want myth, but that wasn't exactly the best episode...

I'm a Star Trek fan firstly. I'm curious as to why people who wear kilts, a very old-fashioned piece of clothing, also like stories set on starships with aliens and futuristic devices 2 centuries in the future far, far from Earth. Maybe because Star Trek has always been archetypal stories given an updated framework. The piping off of a slain comrade, the Shakespearean quotes, and naval feel to the language all seem old-fashioned in a new more vibrant setting. My favorite part, though, has always been Uhura, classic or modern: like the t-shirt says "Set phasers to STUNNING!".

Star Wars is easier: the Jedi with their robes and lightsabers look like medieval monks and Princess Leia looks just like well ... a princess. Very, very retro. Still, who wouldn't want to carry a lightsaber on their kilt belt.

All I'm saying is that Captain Kirk could kick Anikin and Luke's collective a**es at the same time without breaking a sweat.

Not that I don't love star wars, but the hero's are pathetically weak and whiny. Which is why I'm rooting for Leah and Padme--and Han.

Kirk would be too busy seducing all the alien ladies! I say this with the utmost respect as Bill Shatner is one of Canada's national treasures!

<putting on "The Cloak of Channeling" John Bradshaw V2.1> Uh hem, actually the two sagas are quite similar in their difference. They both have to do with the struggle of the soul for meaning.

At one level the Star Trek Saga (s) show that through continued technological development we can address that "hole" inside of us; that thirst for some thing greater.

On the other hand the Star Wars universe deals with that same hunger in a similar but different way; saying despite the technological advances we still have to deal with core issues of Love, Trust, Good and Evil.

It is interesting that the two story lines are set in two completely different time structures (aside from the time war story line of Enterprise) the Star Trek universe is at the beginning of a new era, while the Star Wars one is at the end of thousands of years of Republic and Empire.

The one major difference is the reliance on the "Force" or Spiritual Chi. Jedi's use light sabers and the Force, while the more individualistic Star Trek uses phasers. End of Channel

This has been discussed on many a Sci-Fi con panel! (Geek hat on)
The Borg shields only seem to be effective against 'phased energy weapons' and not solid tools or fists, like when Worf uses his Meq'leth (Klingon machete) on them in 'Generations'. Based on the movies, the lightsaber beam seems to act like a solid, so it would very likely be effective against the Borg shields.

If I see a Borg, I'll have the replicator whip up a Browning M2, and see how the shields deal with those .50 cal "solid tools"
