If you decide to purchase your U.S. Army tartan kilt do add Kathy Lare to your list of kiltmakers to choose from www.kathyskilts.com She is from a military famiy (Marines) and hand sewed my Leatherneck and Royal Air Force tartan kilts. She's also trained in sewing the elaborate military box pleats. Of course there are many kiltmakers to choose from.
I believe I've seen pics of a number of guys wearing their military mess jackets with "unofficial" service tartans. Just don't recall the venues. May be okay at some events and not okay at others.
