I like the fly plaid and I just bought myself a new drummers plaid at a highland games I was at (don't tell the other pipers in my band) I think they look sharp. As far as looking fussy,.... well.. Come on ..Doesn't the whole thing look a bit fussy???

Yes the fly, or drummers plaid does look very fussy, unless you are a member of a pipe band. It is just overdoing things, just that bit too much. Brash ,some would consider it to be.

When I look at old pictures of guys like Pipe major Willie Ross or G.S.McLennan I think they look pretty sharp, even with the plaids that they are wearing. Yes i guess it may be because I'm a piper, but I think that the Highland dress these days is getting a bit more ...well..toned down? Its seams to me like its lost a bit from the old celtic twilight days. I still say that if your getting all dressed up in a kilt, jacket, sgian dubh and A' that, especially if your over here in Canada or North America your really doing it up anyway.

Fly Plaids are just one way the MAN sells more accessories.
Kind of like the high street shops selling belts with kilt packages that don't need them.
