What I was wondering is what would HRH wear if he and Camilla were just going out to dinner at say, a 3 or 4 star restaurant or the equivalent? I would think that Highland Dress might be too formal for something like that. Howver, I could be wrong.

Well, do you really think they just go "out to dinner at, say, a 3 or 4 star restaurant or the equivalent?"

The Heir to the Throne just doesn't operate like that, Lancer. First of all, remember that the kilt is only worn by the gentlemen of the Royal Family in Scotland...in the Highlands in particular. Most of the official events undertaken by Prince Charles while there are daytime events, ergo he would be dressed in a tweed jacket. If he were in the Lowlands, doing something in Edinburgh or what have you, he would wear a suit. As to what he would wear when dining privately, I do not know. If he were attending a dinner in Scotland, again he would wear Highland evening dress to some events, and a dinner jacket to others.

As much of the Royal Family's time in Scotland is private time, I guess it is quite possible that HRH might like to pop round to the local for a bite and a pint from time to time (I know he does when he is staying at Highgrove in England). Your guess is as good as mine as to what he might wear: kilt and a pullover; kilt and tweed jacket; corduroy trousers; tweed suit? I just don't know. I am pretty confident though, that when he entertains either at Balmoral or the Castle of Mey, he dresses for dinner (evening doublet, black tie/jabot etc.).

    A great thread, BTW.

I have noticed something, and I have a question. It seems that HRH only wears red flashes, and they just barely peek out from under the cuff. I was wondering if that was something to do with being royalty, or was it just personal taste?

Not that I have a problem with it, his taste in kilts is impeccable. I was just wondering.

It's personal taste, nothing more, nothing less.

Prince Charles actually employs a number of valets whose job it is to ensure that he is correctly dressed for each occasion. The choice of flashes etc. will have been made by them and his general standard of dress is entirely their responsibility, an unusual concept for most of us in these more egalitarian times.

Sometimes I wear solid red flashes even if there's not red in the rest of my outfit. In my opinion, gray hose and red flashes work really well with the Gordon tartan.

I can really appreciate of Charles always seems to have his fingers inside his waistcoat's pocket.

Shows someone utterly comfortable with a kilt, and in command of what to do with his idle hand.

    Duh!

I didn't realize the Duke of Rothesay was HRH the Prince of Wales. Thanks for the link. I now realize why the clothes fit so well, he has really good tailors!

    Regards,
