In France, a gentleman is someone who could do up the bottom button, but wont.

I button mine. I just like it that way. If it ever bunched or became uncomfortable, I'd probably unbutton it and not think twice.

Depends on the cut of the vest for me. I have two that sort of sweep away at the very bottom so I don't button those. If it is cut straight then I will button all of them.

For me comfort would certainly be the deciding factor.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

Interesting. I do just the opposite, unbuttoning the bottom on a straight cut vest, and buttoning the bottom on a cutaway vest.

I have yet to wear a jacket with kilt, but should I take it up, I'll decide then.

I first started wearing a kilt & waiscoat with the pipe band. I used to leave the bottom button undone (as I had been taught growing up), but then someone in the band pointed out that everyone else in the band was buttoning theirs, so I should as well (uniformity and all that).

When I'm wearing my personal kilt, I'm usually not wearing a waistcoat. When I do wear a waistcoat, I leave the bottom button undone (no need to conform to others then).

The custom of leaving the bottom button on a waistcoat ('vest," in American English) undone comes from the early 20th century. King Edward VII was too rotund to fasten his bottom button and the custom came from his imitators.
    I always leave it unbuttoned.

I don't like the buttonhole showing.
