Long Goat and Horse Hair Sporrans

In a recent thread about P< Burgess, the question of long haired sporrans came up, and whether or not they are commonly worn. They are! While more frequently seen in Scotland than in the US, they remain a popular choice of many gentlemen to balls and parties and formal events.

As I always think pictures help get a point across better than too much verbiage, I include these to illustrate my point. I thought that since many of these pics are of everyday folk at balls in the past several years, it would be best to crop out the heads of some so the sporrans' owners remain anonymous!

    Bring back the "proper" sporran!

Great photos-- a quick check on ebay today (27 SEPT 09) revealed no fewer than four "antique" goat and horse hair sporrans for under $350. Much better than one of those ubiquitous bits of bunny fur, in my opinion!

A classic look to be sure, one is on my wish list, Sandford, as I recall you have an exquisite example of a goat hair sporran.

I need to get out more! lol! Thanks for all the pics.

I always thought it was a bit pedantic when various "How to Wear a Kilt" articles eschewed wearing these except for "bandwear".

I think they're very nice looking, very handsome, and really finish the look off quite well.

I really like the look of horse/goat hair sporrans but I don't think I could justify spending the money for one when I would almost never find the occasion to wear it.
