    [QUOTE=McMurdo;797476]Interesting stuff NewGuise
    Here in Toronto I run into kilt wearers from time to time, in fact when I moved into my apartment building a gent that lives here came up to me saying he though the was the only one, I've since introduced him to XMarks. We also have a statue of Robert Burns in Toronto, here is ours.

    Where the heck is that? I'd like to see it.

    Yes it can be, I must say I do not go by there at night any longer, but when I was younger I lived right up the road.

    Growing up, (born and raised in Southern Alberta) I can't say that kilts weren't commonplace. They were. Usually it was special occasions, whether they were being worn by pipe bands, or someone getting married, or for a cultural event, or for Scottish dancing, to be fair, I can certainly say that I grew up around kilts and that Canadians wear kilts... Mind you, it never occurred for me to wear one until recently, nor did I think people might wear them without a special occasion to go to, but that's besides the point.
    etc, etc.... So in that sense, I'd call kilts about as Canadian as poutine and maple syrup, eh!

    I really enjoyed reading your post.

    Thank you.

    Current Canadian Scottish Regiments now number 14, unless there have been some cutbacks or amalgamations that I am unaware of.

    Thats the thing though i would say that all things being equal (Ie same population numbers) that there are more people who wear a kilt daily or at least not just for weddings etc in canada and /or the US than in Scotland or the UK as a whole. It also seems to be better accepted over there.

    Some 45 years ago, I lived in Scotland and attended school for a year as an exchange student. Then the kilt was only worn for weddings, funerals, certain sporting events, and little else. I had packed with me my kilt kit. While there a family function was to be kilted, and my "brother" advised that it would be fine to be in suit and tie as I had not a kilt as the rest of the family. He was surprised when I unpacked my kit and was dressed and ready before he was. As the family were Keith, it was well to be a MacNeil and not a Gunn. The rellies were surprised to hear my American accent, as they thought that I was Scot. I was 13 at the time, and enjoyed the year of being immersed in the culture of Scotland.
