I really appreciate the replies. Some of the "talk" I've heard is about the pin snagging on something, etc., but it might just be those who are overly anxious about getting their kilt "dirty" or "ruined."
Like I said, I've always worn a pin, but really did want to know if there was a "trend" (which is a word that should have clued me in) in not wearing them. One of mine is a minature sgian dubh, which I've always loved. It's also the one I always wear. I would like one of the large blanket pins.

I had a sword style kilt pin that I caught on a chair while standing up one day. Put a small hole in the apron of the kilt (since repaired). Every since then, the only kilt pins I wear have been modified to take a rare-earth magnet as a fastener. Then when the pin snags, all that happens is that the pin slides off the magnet backer with no damage to the kilt at all.

That's a good idea. Got pics of the modification? Do you pin a base to the kilt, then magnet the decoration to the base, or put one magnet on either side of the fabric and dispense entirely with the pin?
